Does Politics Have to be so Antagonistic?

When one political party takes an action the other strongly opposes, there can be pressure to respond in kind—or go even further. Over time, political disagreements can become a cycle in which each side sees its actions as necessary responses to what the other side has proposed.
At this meeting, we’ll explore how we experience this dynamic, what we want from political leaders when the stakes feel high, and whether there are times when not being antagonistic is possible—or even desirable.
We’ll ask questions such as:
- Have you ever found yourself wanting your side to push harder because of something the other side had done? What felt at stake for you?
- Have you ever thought your own side went too far in responding to the other? What made it feel different that time?
- Can you think of a political leader who chose not to respond in kind—or who worked with the other side when there was pressure not to? How did you react?
- What might make you support a leader who chooses to not fight the other side’s proposal, even when other people on your side wanted them to?
This will be an opportunity to explore how political actions and reactions shape one another and consider what we want from our leaders when political differences and pressures increase.
Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
