What Should U.S. Citizenship Require?
Sunday, October 4, 2026
5:00 PM Pacific / 6:00 PM Mountain / 7:00 PM Central / 8:00 PM Eastern
Virtual (online)
Free

Becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen carries rights and responsibilities, but people may have different ideas of what should be required of those seeking it. At this meeting, we’ll explore the values, knowledge, commitments, and expectations we associate with becoming an American citizen—and where we think the appropriate boundaries should be.
We’ll explore questions such as:
- When you think about U.S. citizenship, what does being a citizen mean to you beyond having a particular legal status?
- What should be the prerequisites for having a path to citizenship?
- What should someone be expected to know, demonstrate, or commit to before becoming a U.S. citizen?
- What experiences have shaped your views about what we should expect from new citizens?
This will be an opportunity to explore how our experiences and values shape what we believe citizenship should mean, and to better understand where people with different perspectives find common ground—and where they see things differently.
Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
